Subnautica 2 First Major Update Adds Improved Creature Behavior and More Gameplay Changes
Subnautica 2 Hotfix 3 is now live with some major predator balance changes but Unknown Worlds has assured that the game won’t be getting weapons or letting players kill hostiles. Instead, the studio wants to refine the survival mechanics, giving players more options for avoiding and dealing with underwater threats.
The update arrives shortly after Subnautica 2 entered Early Access on May 14, 2026. One of the biggest discussions among players has been the inability to fight aggressive creatures. While some fans requested combat options, Unknown Worlds says the sequel is designed around exploration, survival, and discovery rather than battles.
Adjustments and Player Input for Predator
Hotfix 3 includes a number of tweaks to improve creature encounters. Hammerheads will no longer attack unpiloted Tadpoles, but they can still become interested in the vehicles. This patch also fixes an issue where Hammerheads were ignoring Flares, so this survival tool should be more useful when escaping dangerous situations.
We’ve also made marrow breaches. They now hit harder but attack slower because of increased spacing between attacks. Nibblers also received a fair number of changes, such as shorter detection ranges, slower movement, longer circling before attacking, and increased reactions to the Multitool. Their attacks now do more damage, which changes the balance between avoiding them and surviving encounters.
Developer Anthony Gallegos explained that Unknown Worlds never intended Subnautica 2 to become a combat-focused game. According to the studio, player frustration is mainly caused by limited defensive options rather than the absence of weapons. Future updates will continue adding ways to interact with creatures, including visual feedback such as creature flinches when players hit them.
The predator debate created a split among the community. Some players want more self-defense mechanics, while others think avoiding threats is an important part of the Subnautica experience. After criticism surrounding earlier developer comments, Unknown Worlds clarified its approach and said community feedback will influence future improvements.
Future Content and Subnautica 2 Growth
Subnautica 2 has already seen major success during Early Access. The game has sold 4 million copies since launch and reached more than 467,000 peak concurrent players on Steam. The game’s performance reportedly surpassed developer expectations, while publisher Krafton has agreed to a reported $250 million earnout connected to the studio.
Unknown Worlds is preparing several future improvements, including expanded Biomods, better wreck exploration, clearer Blight encounters, improved voice systems, and multiplayer upgrades. Players will eventually receive more Biomod upgrade options, replayable PDA voice logs, emotes, proximity voice chat, and additional character customization features.
The first big content patch will be a new area around the Collector Leviathan. The expansion will bring new creatures, resources, progression systems and more story content. A new Tadpole chassis is also planned, with developers teasing a larger “stompy” vehicle experience.
Subnautica 2 is currently available on PC and Xbox Series consoles for $29.99. The game is expected to remain in Early Access for at least three years, with developers continuing to expand the alien ocean world while maintaining the franchise’s focus on exploration and survival.
