PlayStation Network Restores Services After Major Outage Prevents Thousands From Playing

Sony has fixed the PlayStation Network outage that locked tens of thousands of players out of digital games, online features and the PlayStation Store for roughly eight hours on Friday. Sony confirmed that all core PlayStation Network services are back online, although some users briefly continued to experience PlayStation Store issues and login delays as traffic returned to normal.

Outage Disrupted Digital Games and Marvel Tōkon Beta

The outage began at around 8:30 a.m. ET, with reports quickly spreading across the United States, Europe, and other regions. The disruption affected PS5, PS4, PS3, PS Vita, web services, and other PlayStation platforms. Players reported being unable to launch digital games, access multiplayer features, verify game licences, browse their friends list, view trophies, or download titles from their libraries.

The timing also affected the launch of the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls open beta. Developer Arc System Works acknowledged the network issues and said it was monitoring the situation while players struggled to log in. Although services have now recovered, some users reported temporary matchmaking delays as servers stabilised. There has also been community speculation that the beta period could be extended beyond its scheduled July 26 end date, though Sony and Arc System Works have not announced any extension.

Digital-Only Debate Returns as Sony Restores Services

The outage reignited debate over Sony’s decision to stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs from January 2028. During the disruption, many owners of digital games were locked out because licence verification could not be completed, while players with compatible physical-disc games were generally able to continue playing offline single-player titles.

The incident also occurred around the same time that Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported connectivity problems in its US-WEST-2 region. Although AWS restored its services earlier in the day, Sony has not confirmed whether the cloud provider’s issues caused the PlayStation Network outage. The outage also brought back memories of other PSN outages, such as a cyberattack in 2011 that took the network down for 24 days, and a worldwide outage in February 2024. With services now restored, Sony has not yet provided an official explanation for what triggered the latest interruption.

BBC – The latest PlayStation Network outage also exposed problems beyond game access, with players unable to view their Trophy lists, recently played games, friends lists, or use the PlayStation App. During recovery, the PlayStation Store briefly returned but displayed “Content Can’t Be Found” errors, while users experienced different levels of service restoration depending on their region. Sony also initially showed PSN as “up and running” on its status page before later updating it to reflect the widespread issues.

IGN – Following the restoration of core PSN services, many players continued to experience login queues and intermittent matchmaking delays as traffic surged back onto the network. Community members also speculated that the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls open beta could be extended beyond its scheduled July 26 end date because thousands of players missed launch-day access, although neither Sony nor Arc System Works has officially confirmed an extension.

Push Square – The outage highlighted another limitation of digital gaming, as some PlayStation users were unable to verify digital game licences, preventing access even to certain single-player titles. In contrast, owners of compatible physical-disc games were generally able to continue playing offline, reinforcing the reliability of physical media during large-scale network disruptions.

Game Informer – The Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls development team officially acknowledged the PlayStation Network disruption, saying it was investigating login and network issues affecting PS5 players. The outage interrupted the game’s highly anticipated open beta just after Phoenix Cyclops had been announced as its first downloadable content (DLC) character, impacting many players attempting to join on launch day.

Bigrednerd – The latest PSN disruption is only a part of Sony’s long history of network outages. Its PlayStation Network was offline for 24 days in 2011 after a cyberattack that compromised personal details of 77 million users, and Sony suffered another global outage in February 2024. These recurrent events keep raising concerns about the reliance of digital games and media services on continuous online authentication.
