Samsung SDS Partners With Dunamu to Build Stablecoin and AI Payment Platform
Samsung SDS has reportedly partnered with South Korean fintech firm Dunamu to develop a new stablecoin and AI payment platform . It can tap into Samsung SDS’s experience in enterprise technology, cloud, blockchain and security, and combine it with Dunamu’s know-how in digital assets and financial services.
The partnership between Samsung SDS and Dunamu announced earlier this month is a sign of growing interest in stablecoins for making payments, settling transactions and carrying out cross-border transactions. But we still don’t know when the platform will go live, what currencies it will support, what regulatory approvals it will have and what commercial partners will be involved.
Stablecoin platform could speed up payments
Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value by pegging to a traditional asset such as a national currency.
For businesses, a stablecoin payment platform might be better at moving money than some traditional banking systems. It can also reduce the time taken to settle cross-border payments, online marketplaces and digital services.
The platform’s utility will also depend on the acceptance of the tokens by merchants, transaction costs, liquidity and security.
Samsung SDS Enterprise Technology
Samsung SDS will provide the technical infrastructure to operate the platform securely.
Its expertise includes cloud computing, enterprise software, blockchain systems, cyber security, logistics and digital identity. This means that the platform can scale to high transaction volumes and can be used by banks, corporations and government regulated services.
Samsung SDS can also do systems integration to connect the payment platform to accounting, supply-chain and customer management software.
Dunamu is a specialist in digital assets
Dunamu is best known for operating Upbit, one of South Korea’s biggest cryptocurrency exchanges.
Its experience in digital assets, trading systems, wallets and financial compliance could play a key role in building out the stablecoin element. Dunamu can provide end users with token trading, blockchain linkage, custody tools and payment services.
The firm’s involvement might also assist the platform to weave itself into existing digital asset markets.
AI fraud detection
Artificial intelligence is likely to play a major role in the payment system.
AI tools could track transactions in real time and flag suspicious activity, pointing to potential fraud or money laundering. The platform can also use AI to automate compliance checks, customer support, payment routeing and risk assessment.
But automated systems need to be tested carefully so they don’t accidentally block legitimate payments, or make unfair decisions.
Key is regulatory approval
Huge financial and legal hurdles for stablecoin projects.
South Korean regulators may look at how the token is backed, who holds customer funds and whether users can convert stablecoins to fiat currency. They may also need tough controls to prevent money laundering and to protect consumers.
Much of the project’s success will depend on how closely it observes regulations on banking, securities, privacy and digital assets.
