Tomb Raider Catalyst Delayed Until 2028 as Amazon Confirms Longer Development Timeline

Tomb Raider Catalyst Delayed Fans Will Have To Wait A Little Longer Than Expected Originally set to release in 2027, the game will now arrive in 2028, delaying the development of Crystal Dynamics’ next big Lara Croft adventure. Amazon Games has acknowledged the conversation around the release window, but says things are going well in development and it’s not ready to announce any new launch timing.

Amazon: It’ll Take Longer to Develop

The new timeline comes after Amazon Games executive Jeffrey Gattis mentioned a 2028 release in an interview about the company’s future AAA projects. Amazon said it doesn’t have an official release date update to share at this time but stressed development is moving forward as planned.

While the publisher hasn’t made an official announcement of a delay, the latest comments mean players should be expecting a Tomb Raider Catalyst release in 2028, rather than the previously anticipated 2027 launch window.

Why the release window changed

The timeline change comes after another project in the franchise, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, was pushed back to February 2027. Marketing and scheduling may have been a problem, with two major Tomb Raider games in the same year and the title already consuming a large part of the release window.

Allowing Catalyst to spend more time in the oven also gives Crystal Dynamics room to continue polishing the game, which has been called one of the studio’s biggest projects to date.

What to Look Forward to in Tomb Raider: Catalyst

Tomb Raider Catalyst will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and feature an experienced Lara Croft on a whole new adventure set in Northern India. Lara’s investigation into a powerful mystery tied to the region will see players face ancient ruins, dangerous environments, puzzles, exploration and action.

The game has been in development since 2022, and will be the first all-new mainline Tomb Raider title since 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Fans have built very high expectations after the long wait.

What the Delay Means to Players

Longtime fans might not like the idea of another year of waiting, but a longer development cycle might be better for the final game in the long run. Studios are increasingly opting for longer production schedules in recent AAA releases to provide better performance, fewer technical issues and a more polished experience at launch.

Amazon Games is spreading out Tomb Raider releases so each title can have its own marketing campaign instead of competing for attention.

What’s coming next?

Amazon Games has not yet announced an exact release date, or any new gameplay footage or preorder details. The company said it will share more details when development is at the right level.

Tomb Raider Catalyst is still in active development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC for now. Fans will probably be looking at a 2028 release now.
