Sony Continues PlayStation Disc Plans Despite Strong Fan Backlash
Sony PlayStation disc sales will come to an end for new games from January 2028, and the company says it has no plans to change course despite widespread criticism from gamers. Speaking during Sony’s latest earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao acknowledged the strong reaction from the PlayStation community but said the company carefully evaluated the decision and believes the gaming industry is steadily moving toward a fully digital future.
Sony Says Digital Gaming Has Become the New Standard
According to Sony, the biggest reason behind the decision is the rapid growth of digital content across the entertainment industry. The company revealed that 82% of PlayStation game sales are now digital downloads, showing that most players already purchase games through the PlayStation Store. Tao said Sony spent considerable time evaluating the move before confirming the transition and believes ending physical discs will not negatively affect its business.
Sony also said it understands that physical games are closely linked to players’ memories and personal collections. But executives say PlayStation’s strengths are its curated game library, stable gaming experience and affordable console hardware, not physical media. After the transition, Sony said publishers will still be able to sell boxed editions with digital download codes in stores to help retailers, allowing retail sales to continue even after game discs are gone.
Fans Oppose the Move as 2028 Transition Continues
The announcement has sparked strong opposition across the gaming community. Several online campaigns and petitions have urged Sony to reverse its decision, with a Change.org petition collecting more than 352,000 signatures. Proponents of the physical disc argue the death of the disc could hurt the used game market, limit consumer choice and hurt the ability to preserve games for the long term.
There’s also a community-led PSBlackout campaign scheduled for later in August, with organizers urging PlayStation users to not log into Sony services or make any purchases during the week of the protest. Even with these moves, Sony has not seen any impact on its business and remains on track for the January 2028 timetable.
While the company acknowledged the emotional attachment many players have to physical games, it said its focus is now on building a stronger digital ecosystem and finding new ways to engage gamers. With the transition already underway, PlayStation users, retailers, and game publishers are now preparing for one of the biggest changes in the platform’s history.
