Microsoft Unveils Cheaper Surface Devices and Buyers Are Noticing One Big Change

Microsoft Unveils Cheaper Surface Devices : Microsoft has added two new lower-priced devices to its Surface portfolio, allowing consumers a more inexpensive way to enter the company’s Copilot+ PC family. The new Surface Pro, 12-inch and Surface Laptop, 13-inch are smaller, lighter and cheaper than Microsoft’s premium Surface computers. That’s important for the many buyers looking for new Windows laptops without paying premium pricing. The unveiling also represents a significant shift in Microsoft’s Surface approach. It’s not just catering to high-end buyers that the company is striving to produce affordable AI-ready Windows PCs. They look like the Surface you know, but with a few key differences that the shoppers are already talking about.

PCs with Surface Copilot+

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus chipset powers Microsoft’s latest Surface Copilot+ PCs. Both models are equipped with a neural processing unit that can do AI activities directly on the device. That means things like Recall, enhanced Windows Search, Click to Do, and other Copilot+ features may run with less rely on the cloud.

The 12-inch Surface Pro starts at $799 and the 13-inch Surface Laptop starts at $899. Both devices fall below the larger Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 variants that were released earlier. For students, remote workers and daily consumers, the cheaper entrance price might make a substantial difference.

The New 12-inch Surface Pro

The 12-inch Surface Pro is the more versatile of the two. It sticks to the basic Surface formula: tablet-style body, built-in kickstand, optional keyboard. It’s more compact and portable, and the 12-inch PixelSense display preserves the 3:2 form that many Surface fans love for reading, writing, and browsing.

Microsoft has also made tiny but useful design tweaks. The bezels are more balanced, the body is lighter, and the Surface Slim Pen now magnetically docks to the back for storage and charging. That’s a neater approach than having the pen loose in a bag.

It will have 16GB of RAM, 256GB or 512GB of storage, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, a 1080p front camera and a 10MP rear camera. Microsoft says it can play local video for up to 16 hours. That should be adequate for a full day of normal use in a thin 2-in-1 gadget.

Surface Laptop 13-inch

The 13-inch Surface Laptop is for those who desire a simple laptop and not a detachable tablet. It is Microsoft’s thinnest and lightest Surface Laptop yet, weighing roughly 2.7 pounds. It comes in Ocean, Violet and Platinum finishes, giving the series a more colourful appeal than prior Surface models.

Inside, it’s got the same Snapdragon X Plus CPU as the Surface Pro. It also has 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. Microsoft claims the laptop is 50% faster than the Surface Laptop 5, and boasts the greatest battery life yet on a Surface, with up to 23 hours of local video playback.

It has a 13-inch touchscreen display with a 3:2 aspect ratio. It doesn’t feel as quality as the screens on Microsoft’s more costly Surface models, but that’s part of the bargain for the cheaper price. The screen should still be more than adequate for writing, web surfing, video chats, homework and light creative work.

Buyers Take Note of Missing Surface Connect Port

Buyers are detecting the biggest change in the absence of the Surface Connect port. For years, Microsoft had the magnetic Surface Connect charger as one of the signature parts of the Surface experience. That port isn’t on these new gadgets.

Instead both devices charge via USB-C. It’s a move that better aligns the devices with the rest of the laptop industry, where USB-C charging is becoming more ubiquitous. That’s a relief for a lot of users. Which means one charger can top up a phone, tablet, laptop and other accessories.

Some long-time Surface aficionados may still miss the magnetic connector. Once you snapped it into place, Surface Connect felt safer if someone tripped over the cable. Moving totally to USB-C makes sense practically but it does take away one of the design details that made Surface devices feel different.

Pre-order now open

The 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop are available for pre-order in select areas with shipping starting May 20. Microsoft is also planning corporate editions, such as Windows 11 Pro and added management tools for companies.

Timing is everything. Windows 10 support ends Oct. 14, 2025, and many users will soon require a fresh PC. Microsoft clearly wants to sell these lower Surface models as upgrade alternatives for consumers who want a new Windows 11 device with AI technologies built in.

A Smarter Surface Play

These new Surface devices are not meant to replace Microsoft’s most powerful PCs. They are intended to fill a gap below the flagship models. Which makes sense. Not every buyer wants the biggest screen, the fastest chip, or the most expensive combination.

The Surface brand is an easier sell at cheaper pricing, and the lighter designs make the devices more practical for students, travellers and hybrid workers. It might divide some longtime fans to make the switch to USB-C charging, but it makes the portfolio more streamlined and modern.

Microsoft’s latest Surface launch isn’t so much about sheer power as reach. The business is seeking to make Copilot+ PCs more accessible by providing lower costs, portable form factors, and integrated AI features. That might be just the kind of change a lot of consumers have been hoping for.
