Rhythm Heaven Groove Returns After a Decade With More Than 100 Rhythm Games and New Challenges

Nintendo has officially announced Rhythm Heaven Groove (£33.99 / $39.99), the return of the popular rhythm franchise after a near decade-long break. The latest entry features over 80 solo mini-games, more than 30 multiplayer challenges, and an all-new rhythm RPG mode.

Fresh Modes and Classic Gameplay

Retaining the series’ signature style, Groove relies on simple, perfectly timed button inputs mapped to musical cues. Mini-games range from bouncing fruit off a character’s bicep to chatting with aliens. While many challenges are brand new, several pay tribute to classic games from earlier titles, keeping the “easy to learn, rewarding to master” gameplay loop intact.

A major highlight is Beatspell, a surprisingly deep rhythm RPG-lite adventure. Players cast spells and battle enemies by hitting button patterns to the beat. Progressing through the story requires unlocking chapters by achieving high scores in the solo rhythm games. Multiplayer has also seen a massive upgrade, allowing up to four players to compete or cooperate locally in quirky challenges, such as plucking hairs from a giant onion or forming a wrestler quartet.

Accessibility and Early Impressions

Beyond the core modes, the game offers a Drum Lesson tutorial, a Free Jam mode for casual play, the Rhythm Toy Box, and a relaxed interactive Café. The soundtrack features original music by series veteran Tsunku. Nintendo has also added excellent accessibility options, including timing calibration for TVs and a text-to-speech assistant named Li’l Miss Reeds.

Despite a strong reception, early reviews note a few drawbacks. Some critics feel the game is easier than previous entries and lacks a bit of the quirky presentation that defined the Nintendo DS era. Finally, because input latency on televisions can occasionally disrupt timing, playing in handheld mode is highly recommended for the most accurate rhythm experience.
