Bethesda Is Reportedly Developing Fallout 5 Along With Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas Remasters

Bethesda Is Reportedly Developing Fallout 5 – Fallout new vegas remake has hit another reported obstacle after writer Chris Avellone revealed that Bethesda may not have the complete source code needed to fully remake the beloved RPG. Speaking on April 22, 2026, Avellone said that, to his knowledge, the missing source code could make a true remake significantly more difficult, even as reports continue to claim that remastered versions of classic Fallout games remain in development.

Chris Avellone Explains Why a New Vegas Remake Could Be Difficult

Avellone, one of the key creative figures behind Fallout: New Vegas, said Bethesda may not possess the game’s full source code. If accurate, that would create technical challenges for a full remake, potentially requiring developers to rebuild major parts of the game rather than simply upgrading the original.

His comments focus on a remake, not a remaster. A remaster typically updates visuals, performance, and quality-of-life features while relying on much of the original game, whereas a remake often requires rebuilding the game using modern technology.

The comments come months after Windows Central journalist Jez Corden claimed that Fallout: New Vegas Remastered was also in development. Responding to fans on X, Corden simply wrote, “Dw, nv is coming too,” adding to speculation that Bethesda has multiple Fallout projects underway.

Recent reports have also claimed that Fallout 3 Remastered remains in active development and is reportedly aiming for a level of polish similar to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Meanwhile, gaming journalist Jeff Gerstmann has reported that a separate Fallout project at an unnamed Microsoft-owned studio has been canceled, but it is not thought to involve either Fallout 3 Remastered or Fallout: New Vegas Remastered.

Why Fallout Remastering Still Makes Sense Business-wise

There’s still a lot of interest in classic Fallout titles, especially considering that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered drew over 9 million players and was one of the top-selling titles in the US in 2025. That commercial success has strengthened expectations that Bethesda will continue revisiting older titles.

The timing could also work in Bethesda’s favor. Amazon’s Fallout Season 2 is expected to take viewers to New Vegas, potentially renewing interest in the 2010 game. Although neither Fallout 3 Remastered nor Fallout: New Vegas Remastered has been officially announced, multiple reports continue to point toward both projects moving forward.

For now, however, fans should treat all remaster and remake claims as unofficial until Bethesda confirms them. Avellone’s comments suggest that while a visual remaster may still be possible, creating a full-scale remake of Fallout: New Vegas could prove far more technically challenging if the original source code is indeed incomplete.
