Disney Plus Moves Forward With Afterlife With Archie Series From the Riverdale Creators
Archie Series – Disney+ officially moving ahead with Afterlife With Archie, bringing one of Archie Comics’ darkest and most popular stories to live-action television. The project unites the creative minds behind Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to give fans a horror inspired take on the familiar Riverdale universe. The streaming platform is reportedly aiming for a Halloween 2027 release, making it one of the biggest genre projects in development for Disney+.
Archie Universe Gets a Dark Spin
While earlier Archie adaptations were about teen drama, romance and mystery, Afterlife With Archie is a survival horror story. The comic kicks off with a magical spell to help Jughead’s dog that goes horribly wrong and turns into a zombie outbreak that takes over Riverdale.
As the infection spreads, Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and their friends must band together to survive while making impossible choices. The comic series was well received for mixing horror and emotional storytelling, and became one of Archie Comics’ most successful contemporary titles.
Creators of Riverdale Reunite for the Series
A television adaptation is in development with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator of the comic book series and hit television show Riverdale. Producer Greg Berlanti, whose production company helped build the Archie TV franchise, is also on board.
The project is being produced by Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, Archie Comics Studios and Muckle Man Productions. Aguirre-Sacasa has called the adaptation a “full-circle moment,” adding that Afterlife With Archie was the creative seed for Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
What the Fans Can Expect
Disney+ has not released any casting news or confirmed if any of the Riverdale actors will be back in their roles. The series is currently in the early stages of development and additional announcements will be made as the production progresses.
The adaptation also marks Archie Comics’ continued expansion into other genres. Rather than going back to the typical high school setting, Afterlife With Archie dives into a darker world where horror rules supreme. Viewers can expect further updates on casting, filming and a first teaser if production stays on track for its planned Halloween 2027 release.
