Snoop Dogg Biopic Starring Jonathan Daviss Gets March 28 2025 Release Date
Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss has been cast as legendary rapper Snoop Dogg in a biopic of the musician, which Universal Pictures has officially greenlit. The film is set to debut in theatres on August 6, 2027, and is one of the studio’s biggest music biopics in development.
The announcement has sparked excitement among hip-hop fans and movie lovers alike, as the project brings together an experienced creative team and one of music’s most recognisable figures.
Jonathan Daviss Scores Biggest Role of Career
Jonathan Daviss has earned praise for his performance as Pope Heyward on Netflix’s Outer Banks, but playing Snoop Dogg will likely be the biggest test of his acting career.
The film will chronicle the rise of Calvin Broadus Jr., aka Snoop Dogg, from Long Beach, California to one of the most influential artists in hip-hop. Snoop Dogg has also built a successful career in television, business, sports and entertainment beyond music, making his life story much bigger than a traditional music biopic.
The Project Is in Experts’ Hands
Universal has hired Craig Brewer to direct the film. Brewer is known for Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name, both of which received acclaim for their storytelling and musical elements.
The screenplay has been rewritten by Brewer with Joe Robert Cole, who previously wrote for Black Panther. Snoop Dogg is also producing the film along with Brian Grazer and Sara Ramaker, President of Death Row Pictures.
The movie will be the first major production to be released under the partnership between Death Row Pictures and NBCUniversal, marking the company’s move into film production.
What to Expect From The Biography For Fans
While Universal has not released a full plot synopsis, the studio confirmed the film will feature music from Snoop Dogg’s extensive catalogue and focus on key moments from his personal and professional life.
The film is expected to focus on the challenges, opportunities and milestones that helped shape Snoop Dogg into a global entertainment icon, rather than just re-create concerts or hit songs.
More casting announcements are expected in the next few months as production continues.”
Why This Movie Matters
Music biopics have become a huge hit in recent years, with audiences taking to stories about legendary artists in a wide range of genres. Universal seems to be taking a similar long-term approach to the Snoop Dogg story, assembling a talented creative team, authentic music and the artist’s direct involvement.
It’s a major career-maker for Jonathan Daviss that could introduce him to a much bigger global audience. For Snoop Dogg, the film is an opportunity to tell his story to a new generation, and celebrate a career that has helped shape music and popular culture for more than three decades.
