Pokémon GO Genetic Mastery: Global 2026 Timed Research: Genetic Mastery rewards players with a free choice of Mega Mewtwo The limited-time six-step quest allowed trainers to unlock either Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y by completing research tasks and selecting their preferred path after Step 3. The event was available only on July 11 and July 12, and players had to finish the research before it expired.
Professor Willow’s research features Mega-Evolved Mewtwo and provides trainers with useful items such as Mewtwo Candy, Rare Candy, an Elite Charged TM, Mega Energy and a special Mewtwo encounter. The Mega Evolution picked already had its first Mega Level unlocked, so it was ready to go.
Genetic Mastery Tasks and Mega Mewtwo Choice
The six-step research includes tasks like spinning PokéStops, catching Pokémon, making throws, powering up Pokémon, using TMs, hatching Eggs, and completing Field Research. Early rewards include Poké Balls, Berries, Stardust, XP, Pokémon encounters, and Mega Energy.
After completing Step 3, players permanently choose between Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y. The choice determines which Mega Energy reward they receive. However, selecting one form does not block players from unlocking the other Mega Evolution later. Trainers can collect the required Mega Energy from Super Mega Raids and use it on the same Mewtwo or another one.
Mega Mewtwo Y is considered the stronger overall option because of its higher Attack stat, higher CP potential, and superior Psychic-type performance. It has a reported Total Damage Output of around 810 compared with Mega Mewtwo X’s 762.9. Mega Mewtwo Y is also considered one of the strongest attackers in Pokémon GO.
Mega Mewtwo X offers Psychic/Fighting typing and provides Fighting-type benefits, but it struggles to compete with dedicated Fighting attackers like Mega Lucario. Mega Mewtwo Y is weak to Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type attacks, with recommended counters including Necrozma (Dawn Wings), Mega Tyranitar, Mega Gengar, Shadow Tyranitar, Shadow Hydreigon, and Mega Absol.
Best Mega Mewtwo Strategy for Players
Mega Mewtwo X raids appeared on Saturday, July 11, while Mega Mewtwo Y raids appeared on Sunday, July 12. Players can choose the Mega form unavailable on their raid day, saving time and reducing Mega Energy farming.
Most of the recommendations from the community are for Mega Mewtwo Y who has a great set of psychic attacks and does well overall in battle. However, Mega Mewtwo X remains useful for players who want its unique typing and Fighting-type advantages. Trainers can also improve their Mewtwo’s stats later using Gold or Silver Bottle Caps if those items become available.
