Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Brings Back the Pirate Adventure Fans Wanted
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is set to release on July 9, 2026 and is seen as a big opportunity for Ubisoft to rebuild player trust after a string of recent setbacks. The remake brings back the iconic pirate adventure from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, with modern graphics, improved gameplay mechanics and new content, all while keeping the identity of the original game intact.
Developed by Ubisoft Singapore with support from 14 Ubisoft studios worldwide, Resynced is considered the first full remake of an Assassin’s Creed title. Unlike a traditional remaster, the game has been rebuilt using the Anvil engine with upgraded technology, including ray tracing, enhanced weather effects, improved animations, and completely recreated environments and assets.
The remake removes the “IV” from the title to focus on the legacy of Black Flag itself. Players once again step into the role of Edward Kenway, an 18th-century pirate who becomes involved in the long-running conflict between the Assassins and Templars after taking the identity of an Assassin.
Edward Kenway’s Return
Edward Kenway remains the central character of Resynced. Unlike traditional heroes, Edward begins his journey as a pirate driven by personal wealth and freedom rather than a desire to fight for justice. As the story progresses he gradually learns about the deeper world of the Assassin Brotherhood and the consequences of his actions.
The remake brings back voice actor Matt Ryan, who recorded new scenes to expand Edward’s story. Players will also encounter famous historical pirates, including Anne Bonny and Edward Teach.
Gameplay Changes & Ubisoft’s Future
Resynced offers a plethora of gameplay upgrades, including a redone combat system with perfect parries, faster takedowns, kicks and new attack abilities. The Rope Dart has also been improved so that players can pull enemies closer to themselves and be more effective in combat.
The legendary Jackdaw ship is back with improved naval battles, new weapons, customization options and more exploration. Players can upgrade their ship, fight the British and Spanish fleets, explore underwater locations, complete officer missions, and experience a new endgame chapter.
However, some of the original features have been removed. Some fans may be disappointed to see the remake does not include the Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Freedom Cry expansion and the original multiplayer mode.
Commercial expectations for Resynced are already high. Analyst Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics reported strong pre-launch performance, with the game reportedly selling more than 300,000 copies on Steam before release. The remake also reportedly surpassed the lifetime Steam sales of Skull and Bones before launch.
Originally released in 2013, Black Flag became one of the most popular Assassin’s Creed games due to its pirate fantasy, naval combat, and memorable story. Ubisoft hopes Resynced can capture that same magic while proving that carefully chosen remakes can become a successful strategy for the company’s future.
