Apple Pay Outage Prevents Users From Connecting to Wallet Services
Some users are reporting what appears to be an Apple Pay outage, with users unable to connect to Wallet services, make contactless payments or access stored cards. The disruption has inconvenienced customers who depend on iPhones and Apple Watches to make everyday purchases, for transit and online checkout.
The problem may be with Apple’s Wallet infrastructure and not the banks or payment cards themselves, reports suggest. But the scale of the outage, the countries affected and the technical reason are still unverified.
Users Report Problems With Apple Wallet
Some customers reported the Wallet would not open and Apple Pay would not work.
Some of the affected customers may have been unable to view card details, verify payment credentials, add new cards or complete purchases at affected terminals. Others may have experienced a connection error while their internet service was working fine.

Disruption May Cause Contactless Payments to Stop Working
Normally Apple Pay allows users to make payments by bringing an iPhone or Apple Watch close to a compatible terminal.
If there’s an outage, the device might not be able to authenticate the payment or connect to the service you require. Transactions requiring real-time verification can be especially vulnerable.
Some stored cards might still work in some situations, but customers should not expect all Apple Pay transactions to work properly while services are disrupted.
Online and in-app purchases could also be affected
But the disruption may not be limited to physical stores.
You can also use Apple Pay to buy things or subscribe to services in apps, on websites, and for other digital transactions. If Wallet authentication is not available, customers may have to enter card information manually or select a different payment method.
Merchants who use Apple Pay as their main checkout option could see abandoned purchases until the service is restored.
Banks May Not Be Held Responsible
Sometimes customers think their bank has blocked a card when Apple Pay stops working.
In a platform-wide outage, the bank account and physical card may still be fully functional. Users can still pay with the physical card, draw cash or use the bank’s own app.
You can check Apple’s system-status page and the service notices from the card issuer to help determine whether the issue is with Apple or the financial institution.
Transit and Travel Users Experience More Inconvenience
Apple Pay outage can be especially disruptive for transit riders who use Wallet for transit payments or digital passes.
People who rely on Express Transit may not be able to get to the transport systems it supports if the service is down. Travellers may also have problems getting boarding passes, hotel keys or other items stored in Wallet.
Having a physical card, ticket or other form of payment can help reduce the risk of being stranded during an interruption to service.
Do not take cards off repeatedly, users.
Deleted and re-added cards may not fix a server-side outage.
Multiple attempts may cause additional problems, especially if bank verification is required to reactivate the card. For users, the first thing is to reboot, test connectivity, check Apple’s status information and wait for official guidance.
Customers should also be wary of unofficial sites that claim to restore access to Apple Pay in exchange for login or card details.
