Millions of Social Security Recipients Will Not Receive an August Payment Because of the 2026 Schedule

In August 2026, millions of Social Security recipients users will see something strange but it won’t be benefit cuts or payment delays. Instead, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is altering the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment schedule because August 1 falls on a weekend. This implies that eligible claimants will receive their August benefit on July 31, and no separate SSI payment in August.

Why is there no SSI payment in August?

The SSA will pay SSI on the first day of the month as soon as is practical. If the date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a government holiday, payment will be paid on the next prior working day. Because August 1, 2026 is a Saturday, the August SSI payment will be deposited on Friday, July 31.

That means beneficiaries will receive two SSI payments in July, one on July 1 for July benefits and one on July 31 for August benefits. Beneficiaries will still receive the full amount owed to them for the year, but there won’t be an SSI payment in August.

Whose schedule is changing?

The change in payments mostly affects Supplemental Security Income recipients, a federal programme that assists those who are elderly, disabled and have low income and resources.

Regular recipients of Social Security retirement, survivor and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) will not be affected by this calendar modification. August payments will continue to be made on the SSA’s regular payment schedule, based on birth dates or special qualifying conditions.

What recipients should know

“Receiving two payments in July does not mean beneficiaries are receiving double money. It just pays August benefits on July 31st. That means financial counsellors are telling consumers to cut back on spending as there won’t be another SSI deposit until September.

SSA has a long history of employing this scheduling practice when the first day of the month falls on a weekend or on a federal holiday. Other months of 2026 will have similar date alterations.

What comes next?

If you are qualified for SSI, you will receive your next normal monthly payment on September 1, 2026, after getting your early payment on July 31, unless you are eligible for another calendar adjustment.

That means retirees and SSDI recipients will continue to get paid on their normal schedule according to their birth month. The Social Security Administration recommends that you check with your financial institution first and if you don’t receive a payment, wait three days for it to be processed through the mail before contacting them.
