Hyundai Recall 2026 Affects Nearly 48000 SUVs Due to Seat Belt Problem That Could Increase Crash Injury Risk
Hyundai Recall 2026: Hyundai said it is issuing a new U.S. safety recall covering almost 48,000 compact SUVs because a rear seat belt buckle might not secure a passenger properly in a crash. The problem is limited to the rear centre seating position. However, there is a considerable concern that diminished restraint function can raise the risk of harm. Owners can continue to drive their vehicles, but passengers should avoid sitting in the afflicted seat until it is repaired.

Hyundai is recalling 47,749 Kona sold in the U.S. over an issue with the seat belt. The recall covers 47,733 model-year 2026 Hyundai Kona SUVs and 16 model-year 2025 Kona Electric vehicles. The gasoline-powered Kona were manufactured from July 8, 2025, through February 13, 2026, while the impacted electric cars were made from July 8 through October 21, 2025. NHTSA describes the campaign as recall 26V452 and Hyundai’s recall number is 306.
Rear Centre Buckle Problem? What’s Wrong?
Hyundai’s complaint with federal safety regulators said some rear centre seat belt buckle assemblies may have been made outside the permitted standard. If the buckle does not function properly, it may not hold the passenger securely in a collision.
The company blamed the fault on a stamping die from supplier Joyson . The tooling was not adequately maintained and was worn after being utilised past its authorised service life. Hyundai’s filing does not contain a notice that would reliably alert a driver or passenger that a buckle is affected. NHTSA estimates that roughly 1% of the vehicles under recall may have the problem, although all vehicles in the campaign should get the fix.
No Crashes or Injuries Reported
The South Korean automaker launched an investigation into the situation when a supplier failed a dynamic test in February 2026. The automaker and its North America Safety Office then reviewed production records, field data and recovered parts to determine the affected manufacturing periods.
As of the recall filing, Hyundai has not reported any confirmed collisions, fires, injuries or other U.S. occurrences tied to the problem. The corporation did, however, issue a safety recall on July 6 as a precaution. This means that any problematic components can be taken out before an occupant has to depend on them in an actual crash.
What Should Hyundai Kona Owners Do Now?
Owners should not allow anyone to sit in the rear centre position until the repair has been made by a Hyundai dealer. This specific campaign refers to the back centre buckle, not the two outer rear seats. Families, carers and other travellers should organise their seating wisely — particularly if travelling with youngsters or anyone needing additional assistance.
Vehicle owners can check their 17-character VIN against NHTSA’s recall database. The faulty buckle wasn’t installed in every Kona or Kona Electric, so a VIN search is a better bet than just looking at the model year. VINs included in the campaign were made searchable on July 15, 2026.
Free dealer repair & notification date
Hyundai dealers will replace the rear centre seat belt buckle assembly for free, even if the SUV is no longer covered by the new-vehicle guarantee. Hyundai also intends to refund owners qualified for reimbursement who have previously paid for a repair linked to the same issue.
Official owner notice letters will go out on September 11, 2026. Owners can contact Hyundai customer support at 1-855-371-9460 and specify recall 306. Getting the repair done quickly will bring back full use of the rear seating area and guarantee that all passengersd get the protection the restraint system is supposed to give.
