Anne Hathaway Believed She Offended Christopher Nolan After Missing Three of His Films
Anne Hathaway and Christopher Nolan are back together for The Odyssey but the Oscar-winning actress has confessed there was a time when she really thought she’d done something wrong. During the film’s promotional tour, Hathaway said she briefly thought she might have offended the celebrated filmmaker after not appearing in the three films he directed after Interstellar.
Why Anne Hathaway Thought She’d Offend Christopher Nolan
Hathaway first teamed up with Nolan in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, in which she played Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. Two years later, she was back as Dr. Amelia Brand in Interstellar, a role that is one of her most memorable performances.
After Interstellar, Nolan made Dunkirk (2017), Tenet (2020) and the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer (2023). Hathaway was not in any of those pictures and she joked if she had somehow offended the director.
“I hope I didn’t say anything while we were in space,” Hathaway said during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. While she did meet with Nolan from time to time over the years and their exchanges were always cordial, she admitted that she still wondered why she wasn’t being cast in his projects.
The Odyssey: The Reunion
But those doubts vanished when Hathaway got the call to join Nolan’s next epic, The Odyssey. It is their third collaboration following The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar.
Hathaway has praised Nolan’s directing style, saying that he is a director who can combine technical brilliance with a supportive environment for actors. Working on his productions is creatively and professionally rewarding, she said, so the reunion is especially meaningful.
Nolan’s help in a tough time
The reunion also puts into sharp focus the strong professional relationship between the actress and the director. Hathaway has previously spoken about the period of online backlash, sometimes called “Hathahate,” saying it was an important time in her career and Christopher Nolan was an important part of it.
Some directors didn’t want to cast her because of the public perception, Hathaway said. But Nolan cast her in Interstellar, despite the criticism. She later credited that opportunity with helping her career continue at a time when major roles were becoming more difficult to find.
What it means to fans
Hathaway’s latest comments provide an interesting behind-the-scenes look at how actors sometimes interpret long gaps between collaborations. Fans tend to assume casting decisions are creative or scheduling based, but performers may wonder if they did something wrong.
In Hathaway’s case those concerns proved unnecessary. Her comeback in The Odyssey is a proof that the creative partnership between her and Christopher Nolan is still intact and audiences get to see the duo together after more than a decade.
