Moana Expected to Cross $130 Million Worldwide as Global Box Office Opening Builds Momentum
Disney’s live-action Moana movie is now facing uncertainty at the box office, with new projections suggesting a domestic opening between $45 million and $60 million, much lower than earlier expectations of an $80 million to $105 million debut. The film, releasing on July 10, 2026, could become a major financial disappointment because of its reported production budget of more than $200 million, along with additional global marketing costs.
The movie is based on Disney’s 2016 animated hit Moana and is directed by Thomas Kail, who previously directed the Disney+ adaptation of Hamilton. But Disney worries about audience fatigue, even with the success, given Moana 2 came out just 19 months before the live-action remake. The studio is relying on the franchise’s strong fan base, family appeal, and international popularity to bring audiences back to theaters.
