Moana Expected to Cross $130 Million Worldwide as Global Box Office Opening Builds Momentum
Disney’s live-action Moana movie is now facing uncertainty at the box office, with new projections suggesting a domestic opening between $45 million and $60 million, much lower than earlier expectations of an $80 million to $105 million debut. The film, releasing on July 10, 2026, could become a major financial disappointment because of its reported production budget of more than $200 million, along with additional global marketing costs.
The movie is based on Disney’s 2016 animated hit Moana and is directed by Thomas Kail, who previously directed the Disney+ adaptation of Hamilton. The live-action remake brings back Dwayne Johnson as Maui, while Catherine Laga’aia takes over the role of Moana from Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced the character in the animated version.
Box Office Forecast Drops Despite Franchise Popularity
Earlier tracking suggested that the live-action remake could earn more than $60 million domestically and around $130 million worldwide during its opening period. However, recent estimates have lowered expectations, with some industry observers predicting an opening closer to $40 million.
The film is slated for a North American debut in about 3,875 theaters, including premium formats such as IMAX, 3D and 4DX. International markets are expected to add another $70 million to $75 million, led by Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Disney could be under pressure from a soft opening, given that the film needs a strong showing around the world to justify its hefty budget. Analysts compared its tracking to other disappointing Disney live-action remakes like Dumbo (2019) which opened to $45 million and Snow White (2025) which opened to $42 million.
But successful remakes like Lilo & Stitch, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast have proved that Disney adaptations can still draw crowds when the franchise has strong appeal.
Moana Franchise Success Ups Expectations
The original animated Moana (2016) was a big hit for Disney, earning over $680 million worldwide on a production budget of about $150 million. Its popularity was only boosted by its release on Disney+ where it has gathered an estimated 1.5 billion streaming hours since the service launched.
The franchise got another boost with Moana 2, which was released in 2024 after Disney scrapped its plans for a Disney+ animated series and made it a theatrical sequel instead. The film has been a smash hit at the box office, grossing more than $1 billion worldwide, and opening to $225 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday.
But Disney worries about audience fatigue, even with the success, given Moana 2 came out just 19 months before the live-action remake. The studio is relying on the franchise’s strong fan base, family appeal, and international popularity to bring audiences back to theaters.
The film also includes new music from Lin-Manuel Miranda, featuring performances connected to Dwayne Johnson, Auli’i Cravalho, and Catherine Laga’aia. Meanwhile, discussions about a possible Moana 3 are already underway, with writers Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller attached to early development.
The final box office result will determine whether the live-action remake continues Disney’s successful remake strategy or becomes one of the studio’s biggest financial setbacks.
