Reddit Stock Drops 11 Percent Even After the Company Reports Strong Quarterly Earnings

Reddit stock drops 11 percent in after-hours trading, despite the social media giant generating better than expected second quarter profits. The company reported solid revenue growth and stronger earnings, and offered upbeat guidance. But investors were concerned about slowing U.S. user growth and shifts in how people search online that could hurt traffic down the road.

Another Strong Quarter with Strong Financials

Reddit said it had $805 million in sales in the second quarter, up 61 percent from a year earlier and above Wall Street expectations. The company also outperformed the analysts’ estimates with its earnings per share of $1.25. Net income rose to $253 million, almost tripling from a year earlier.

Reddit still depended largely on advertising, and ad revenue expanded quickly as more businesses boosted their spend on the network. Management offered stronger than expected guidance with a Q3 sales prediction of $860 million to $870 million, showing conviction that business success continues.

Key Financials Highlights

Strong advertising demand and the growth of our global footprint continue, driving revenue growth exceeding 60 percent for the third consecutive quarter. Reddit has 130.3 million daily active users worldwide, up 18 percent from a year ago, the company says.

But U.S. user growth was slower than in the prior few quarters. Executives said changes in people’s internet search habits impacted traffic, but they are counting on product developments and improved engagement to build long-term growth.

What the Investors Sold the Stock for Anyway

Profits were good but investors were unhappy considering the importance of user growth in the domain of the internet. Analysts predict AI search tools and changes to search engine algorithms could mean referral traffic declines over time, with daily active users in the U.S. falling. Reddit, which continues to earn good advertising money and profits, said that keeping up with user growth will be key to preserving its premium valuation. Such anxieties were not eased by the earnings beat.

What this Means for the Investors

The fresh numbers suggest the company is still in a healthy financial place. Revenue growth, improved profit margins and good outlook all imply a healthy ad business.

But investors will probably be watching client involvement very closely for the next several quarters. If management can stabilise U.S. traffic and continue developing fast elsewhere it may help strengthen confidence in the long term growth story for the company. But even with great profitability, the price can be erratic if user growth is moderate.

What Comes Next for Reddit?

Investors will be looking for Reddit’s third-quarter earnings and if management can meet its revenue prediction of $860 million to $870 million. The market will also be looking for any updates on advertising demand, AI related collaborations, search traffic patterns and user growth strategies.

Reddit’s economics still look good at the moment, but the future upside in the stock price may have more to do with adding users than just beating profit estimates.
