Community science (previously well known as Home Science) discipline is an education built with scientific understanding of community concerns, humanistic & social values, technology, and skill base to improve the quality of life of people at large and vulnerable groups in particular.

B.Sc. (Hons.) Community science degree programme is four year professional course recognized by ICAR. Introduced by College of Home Science, Saifabad, Hyderabad from the year 2016-17, it provides an opportune stage for students to learn core courses linked to development of community viz; Foods and Nutrition, Human Development and Family studies, Apparel Design and Textiles, Resource Management and Consumer sciences, Extension education and communication Management. Further they can pursue PG and PhD degrees with specialization in the above subjects.


The relevance of community science course becomes more apparent when the subject is linked to Millennium Development Goals. Knowledge on Foods and Nutrition enlightens the students on changing dietary and life style needs of community in heath and disease and they can apply the knowledge gained in promoting health in partnership with government, industry, institutions and community.

Valuable inputs on entrepreneurship to students with skills and technology is being provided in the areas of Textile and Apparel design, Communication Management, Event management. Counseling is another area wherein students learn the population practices and offer advice, related to child development life skills and consumer buying. Gender empowerment, environment sustainability, public health and sanitation, Consumer science education are the other areas wherein the concepts and knowledge gained sensitizes the students for adopting sustainable and quality living with the understanding of techno, socio economic changes.

e based learning modules , Rural Home Science Work Experience Programme (RHWEP) in villages, , skill and experiential learning, and internship in reputed institutions were initiated to enrich the graduate programme as a unique practice oriented professional course.

Modernized laboratories with updated instruments and equipment, computer labs with state of art software to teach ICT, fashion and interior design, sports facilitity and campus Radio, library, and many other amenities like wifi offer students to explore their talents towards healthy leadership and proficiency.

As per the dynamically changing demands of the society, students in community science are being well equipped with wide range of think tools, technical knowhow, ICT skills and creative talent which transform them as job providers rather than job seekers.

The faculty is qualified, experienced and committed to empower the students with the following professional competencies

  • Entrepreneurship in health foods, value added products, institutional food administration such as hospitals, school meals etc.
  • Diet counseling through life cycle approach, community nutrition education, Consumer counsel,
  • Planning, implementation and evaluation of development programmes and schemes such as ICDS, Mid day meal, infant and supplementary feeding
  • Skills in Fashion styling, pattern making, interior designing, Housekeeping ,event managing
  • Subject matter Extension officers
  • ICT based content development and journalism

Future Road Map

The faculty shall work to enhance professionalism by networking, consortium formations with National and International institutions, universities for exchange of education communication, teaching innovations and research. Resource generation by value added product development, infrastructure building to access Community Science education through MOOC expand the opportunity to reach many stakeholders groups.
